The Q&A Archives: How to Grow Hollyhocks

Question: Any tips for growing Hollyhocks. Are they best started from seed and how long until they produce blooms? Special soil conditions? The area I plan is against the side of the house generally protected from the wind but with full sun at least 7 hoursdaily.

Answer: Hollyhocks are very easy from seed. True perennial types will bloom the second year from seed. Old-fashioned biennial types also take a couple of seasons to bloom. There are a few annual types which will bloom the first season. Hollyhocks require no special treatment, indeed, even thriving on neglect. The more sun they receive the more they bloom and the sturdier the plants.
