I live in zone 5 and would like to make my garden neater by planting a hedge. My garden is only 12 x 28 so it has to be small. any recommendations?

The smaller traditional clipped hedge plants such as boxwood, teucrium, rosemary or lavender are not going to be hardy for you, so you might consider an espaliered apple tree instead. This can be kept very narrow and made to any length and has a lovely winter presence as well. Another option for tidiness might be a low picket fence or some other fencing that fits in with your landscape and house styles. Using a fence would allow you to grow vines along it and also avoid the root competition from a hedge. I hope this gives you some ideas. Your local garden center staff may have additional suggestions based on a more detailed understanding of the effect you are trying to achieve. Have fun with your project!
