| I think you are asking about the climbing evergreen vine called English ivy or Hedera helix. This may or may not work for you. This vine clings with little hairy roots and although you can tear down the vine, the roots are nearly impossible to remove if you ever change your mind and want to remove the vine or if you ever need to do maintenance on the pillars. It will also need regular trimming to keep it from reaching the roof and tangling in the gutters, eaves and so on. I mention this because it can be a factor in the decision of what vine to use. Also, on a western exposure the leaves are possibly going to discolor in the winter due to wind exposure and sun causing it to dry out too much, if your microclimate is a colder one then it may even winterkill. So depending on how exposed the site is, it may not be a good choice. I would suggest you consult with your local county extension and also nursery staff and see what they would suggest based on a more detailed understanding of the planting site and your design goals. It might be that a wisteria or trumpet vine or climbing rose for excample could be a better choice. Enjoy your new vine! |
