The Q&A Archives: what's the best type of drain tile?

Question: I have a walkout basement with sloped hills that drain down to a flat spot in my yard near the patio at the basement door. The drainage from 4 downspouts make the problem worse. I have received two bids from companies to drain the downspouts underground, put a drain in the flat spot and run drainage tile out into a ravine at the back of the property. The bids vary by $550 dollars. The more expensive bid is for 4 inch tile with pea gravel over it. The cheaper bid uses a "sock tile" with a mesh to keep it from clogging. Are they equally effective methods of draining? They had the same plan and measurements, just different types of tile. Can I safely go with the lower bid?
