I am creating a garden and need a suggestion for low growing plants to use a a border. I need something hardy for florida that can grow in partial shade. I would like a plant that would deter cats and dogs from my garden, something with tough leaves or that are a little thorny.

Eric,

The part about detering pets is difficult to solve. However a good low growing plant for a border is liriope, or for a little taller border Chinese holly which has stiff leaves with sharp points. I doubt a pet would venture through that.
