I need to know how to kill an elm tree it is growing out of control and almost growing into the base of my house i want hopefully permenant results |
Probably the first order of business is to cut the tree trunk down to ground level. Once you've done that, you can apply an herbicide containing glyphosate (such as Round-Up) directly to to stump of the trunk with a paint brush. Glyphosate should be transported into the tissues and should effectively kill the roots of the elm. You may need to cut away any sprouts that develop from the stump or the roots. Clip them down as soon as they appear - if you allow these sprouts to develop leaves, the leaves will transport energy back to the root system. By clipping the sprouts off you'll force whatever energy is stored in the roots into the development of additional sprouts. Eventually the roots will run out of stored energy. The combination of glyphosate and pruning will, over time, effectively kill the roots of the elm. |
