After removing plastic bags of soil from my garden, I found long narrow burrows or shallow paths where the bag had been. Then 2 fat white caterpillar-like creatures emerged to crawl in the area. They have a dark face or snout and are larger than I thought slugs are. I poured beer on one and it curled into a ball and became still, the other took cover in soil. What are they? Additional info. We have had occasional tent or bag worms in outr trees nearby and one in our tree last year. Are they kin ?

Eve,

Based on that description my best guess is that you are seeing the grubs of a rhinocerous beetle. For a better identification take some to your County Extension Office. With the suspect in hand they should be able to give a better answer.
