The Q&A Archives: before flowering is there a way to sex bittersweet?

Question: I am considering buying American Bittersweet. From what I have read you need 2 female and 1 male to get the fruit. How can I tell if the plants I buy are one sex ot the other so I am sure I get both sexes?

Answer: Male and female varieties of Celastrus should be identified on the plant labels. Monrovia plants are grown from cuttings so there's no guesswork involved in the gender. These plants should be clearly identified as either male or female. You need only one male and one female to get fruit. If in doubt, you can purchase the self-fruitful form; Celastrus orbiculatus (Chinese bittersweet). The growth habit of this plant is similar to the American Bittersweet. Best wishes with your new plants!
