The Q&A Archives: Growing Herbs in Southwest Florida

Question: What is your best advice for growing herbs in Southwest Florida. The soil is very sandy.

Answer: Edith,

Most herbs need full to part sun to do well. A little late day shade is nice. Mix several inches of compost into the soil prior to planting. Fertilize with light doses of a turf type product at an approximate rate of 1/2 cup per 50 square feet, monthly from early spring to mid summer. Keep the soil mulched well to hold moisture and deter weeds.
