| The best way to start is to run some basic soil tests and then add amendments based on the results of the tests. This will tell you how much (if any) fertilizer or lime and so on to use. In addition to that, the structure of most soils is greatly improved improved by adding copious amounts of organic matter such as compost, rotted leaves, or aged manure and bedding. If you can add at least several inches of that (and repeat it every year) it will be a great start. Your County Extension (732-932-9306) should be able to help you with the tests and interpreting the results. Enjoy your garden! |
