| Platycerium bifurcatum is the botanical name of your Staghorn fern. In its tropical habitat it would grow on the bark of a tree. Most gardeners grow them on slabs of bark, or in hanging baskets filled with moss. There are two kinds of fronds; sterile ones are flat and pale green, turning to tan as they age. These are the ones that support the plant and accumulate organic matter to help feed it. Fertile fronds are forked and resemble deer antlers - hence the name 'staghorn'. Protect the plant fromfrost, water only when the moss or bark slab is dry to the touch. |
