Are there any general tips or advice for laying sod? I currently have a small yard with weeds, dirt, and little grass.

Soil preparation and good aftercare are both key to a successful sod job. I would suggest you work with your county extension to run some basic soil tests and determine which amendments would be best for growing lawn grass, and which procedures to follow in preparing your soil prior to laying the sod. They should also be able to help you plan a lawn maintenance program to keep the sod healthy and growing well after it is installed. Penn State Cooperative Extension also offers numerous publications for lawn care that should be helpful to you.
