The Q&A Archives: Flowering of Firespike Shrub

Question: I planted a Firebush shrub in November. When can I expect it to bloom?

Answer: I believe you have a Firespike or Firestick plant (Odontonema strictum). If so, the plant flowers in the fall with spikes of fire-red, tubular flowers. Firespike is grown throughout Florida, but is sensitive to cold. Plant near hardy shrubs. Mulch the plant well to help conserve moisture. This shrub can be propagated from cuttings.
