| Usually it is better to take of these prior to planting but you may still be able to work with it. A stirrup hole can be used to cut off many small weeds or grass as well as disturb seeds that are about to sprout. Then I would suggest mulching between the plants to prevent additional weeds from sprouting. You may even want to place several layers of damp newspaper on top of the soil and then layer the mulch on top of that. This will help exclude light and smother many weeds. If the weeds are large you may have to dig them out or pull them by hand. If it is a flower garden and there are many stubborn perennial weeds you may want to use a herbicide such as glyphosate, be sure to read and carefully follow the label instructions -- you could use a wipe-on application rather than a spray as it will kill any plant it contacts.
