| After the seeds sprout they will send up a pair of leaves, called seed leaves. In a few weeks the seedlings will develop another set of leaves, and a few weeks later, a second pair of leaves (called true leaves). Once your seedlings have developed two sets of true leaves, the root systems should be strong enough to tolerate being transplanted into larger containers. After transplanting, protect your seedlings from direct sunlight for a week or so. Then you can move them outdoors, into a shady spot. After about 10 days, gradually move them into sunnier and sunnier sites until they're spending all day in the sunshine. If your summer afternoons are really hot, you might want to provide your seedling trees a little protection (filtered sunlight) for their first year. After that they should be able to stay in full sunshine. Enjoy! |
