Overseeding? - Knowledgebase Question

We have ugly, straw-like grass that is brownish most of the time and uncomfortable to walk or sit on. We'd like the kind of grass from childhood, that is healthy, green, soft and pretty long. What is that and can we aerate and overseed right now? We live in Covington, Georgia. Help! Thank you!

I am sorry for this delayed reply to your gardening question. We are transitioning to a new Q&A system and your question was unfortunately lost in the transition. I have discovered it now and hope this reply is not too late to be of help.

I am not sure what your childhood turf species was as it depends on where you grew up and even then there are several possibilities. In the south, St. Augustine is pretty common. You may also have grown up with Centipede or perhaps some type of turf type Tall Fescue. Here is a website that shows photos of some of these species:
