Can the soil in a lawn get compacted? And then is that when you need to aireate?

Nina,

Yes it can. Foot traffic or vehicle traffic can result in compaction which results in less air space around the soil particles and slower water infiltration. Turf growth suffers as a result. You can rent an aerator or hire a landscape care company to aerate for you. The deep tine aerators work best and are usually not available from rental places, so you many need to hire someone in the business to do the job.
