| Amy, I am sorry for this delayed reply to your gardening question as we are transitioning to a new Q&A system. I hope this reply is not too late to be of help. Use an outdoor latex as it is much easier to clean off of your children's hands than oil based paints. Then seal it with a clear coat product.
