One of my neighbors uses cocoa bean mulch in her perennial beds and says it keeps deer away from her hostas and other plants? Does this really work?

Cocoa bean mulch will help conserve soil moisture and suppress weeds, but I don't think there is any documentation that it will repel deer. Cocoa bean mulch can be toxic to dogs, though, so if you have pets who like to chew you might want to avoid using cocoa bean mulch in your garden.
