The Q&A Archives: starting my new lawn

Question: I recently moved into a new home and the grass sod was laid in the front yard as part of the home but the landscaper did not

Answer: Daniel,

You will need to keep the newly laid sod adequately moist, not totally saturated, by giving frequent (daily or twice daily) light waterings for a few weeks then back off slowly to twice weekly for another month or so and then once weekly.

Deep aeration and compost topdressings (1/3 inch deep) once a year will also be helpful.

Fertilize with a 3-1-2 or 4-1-2 ratio product applying 1 pound of nitrogen a month after sodding and again in mid summer and early October this first year.
