| Your plants might be grafted, this rose has been sold both ways. This could account for both problems. If the grafts were not set several inches below the soil surface at planting time to insulate them during the winter, or if they were not well mulched, the grafts might have been damaged by cold and the stress would result in dying canes. If the wild looking shoots are from below the graft, this would be the root stock taking over. Another possibility for them coming loose could be vole damage to the roots, excess moisture damaging the roots, or possibly a disease or pest. I would suggest you consult with your local county extension or certified nurseryman to get a more specific diagnosis and work from there. I'm sorry you are having trouble with your roses. |
