My shrubs keep turning brown in the center or back and a large area dies back as if it has been burnt or is rottening. How can I get it to stop doing this and what causes this?

Based on your description I am not certain what is happening to your shrubs but it sounds like there may be an infection of some kind. The treatment would depend on what specific plant it is and also what exactly is causing the problem. This type of symptom is very difficult to diagnose long distance. I would suggest you work with your county extension and/or certified nurseryman to determine what is causing this and then based on knowing that, determine how to proceed. They may need samples and/or some photos, both close up and of the overall plant, to help them diagnose it. Good luck with your shrubs!
