I've noticed that the leaves of my hickory nut tree, canna lilies, blue salvias, and several other of my flowering perennials have small holes (1/8 to 1/4 inch)in them. This seems to have started with the hickory nut tree. Is this insect damage or some type of plant disease? Can you help me?

Thanks,
V. Roberts

Vickie,

I am sorry for this delayed reply to your gardening question as we are transitioning to a new Q&A system. I hope this reply is not too late to be of help.

That is insect damage, most likely a small beetle. You can either just ignore it since it is not likely to cause any real problmes for the plants and will tend to go away in time, or treat it with a general purpose insecticide product.

Thanks for the question. Please stop in again soon!
