What do the three initials in fertilizer mean and what does each do?

N is Nitrogen, P is Phosphorus and K is Potassium. They are all necessary in some amount for healthy plant growth, as are a number of other elements. The following web page explains this in detail. I think it will answer any fertilizer questions you may have.
