I am making the assumption that it is an indoor Fig, or a Ficus that you are talking about.

Let's talk briefly about what a Ficus needs to be healthy. Primarily, that would be SUN. The more sun it has the happier it will be. Secondly, only water as necessary to keep the soil just slightly moist--on the drier side than many houseplants.

Now for fertilizing, which is what your question was in the first place! Only fertilize a plant during it's growing season, which in the case of your Ficus is March through October. Since Ficus is grown for it's green leaves, look for a fertilizer with a higher nitrogen content. (That's the first of the three numbers found on every fertilizer, ie. 10-5-5.) Add just enough of the fertilizer mix to create a tint of color in the water--or dilute to about 1/4 of the recommended strength. Use this concentration with every watering and you won't go wrong. You won't over fertilize and the plant will be happy for a steady diet rather than a "feast or famine" one!
