Arbors need to be sturdy enough to withstand wind and support any plants you intend to grow on them. They should be made of a weather resistant material or routinely stained or painted to protect them from the elements. The design should complement and tie in with your house style and any fencing or other similar features in your yard. There are many different techniques from simple to elaborate to construct arbors, including from scratch or using a kit or having someone build and install it for you. I would suggest you look at a book or two and find a style you like and work from there. Most garden centers, book stores and libraries offer a selection of books that would include some to get you started. Enjoy your project!
