| I live in a climate that is paradise, at 5000 altitude and far enough south to never frost or freeze. Sorry if I am making you jealous. It is in Mexico. I am wondering if you are allowed to ship plants to Mexico. Also, would it be possible to grow hostas in this climate, in the shade? Our variety of daylilies is very limited here, and I would like to order others if possible. Everything grows like weeds here. Thanks for the info. |
| Thank you for writing. Monrovia is a wholesale only nursery and does not sell retail by catalog or web site so would not be able to sell to you in Mexico. There are some daylilies that may grow better for you among the evergreen types which seem to be more tolerant of a warmer climate. Most daylilies do prefer a winter chill period as do hostas, although it does not have to be frigid they do need that cool weather and do not thrive in ongoing heat or warmth. Most hostas need a period of about 8 weeks with temperatures below 40 degrees. Since you have such a mild climate perhaps you should be investigating plants that grow well in say zone 10 instead. There are some great plants, including what is commonly called the Floridian hosta -- actually it is a ginger! You might look into growing plants among the Kaempferia, also the genera Zingiber, Hedychium, and Curcuma. These are great foliage plants you could use similar to the way you would use hosta in a colder area. As far as the daylilies go, you might look into the daylily clubs and suppliers in Florida or California for pointers on varieties to try and possible sources.
