First of all...Welcome to gardening!!! There are plenty of varieties of tomato, green beans, and bell peppers for zone 5 to choose from. Allow me to suggest a few standbys which I feel are great for the beginning gardener: For tomatoes - Burpee's "Big Boy", Burpee's "Big Girl", Burpee's "Supersteak Hybrid". For green beans - "Kentucky Wonder". For bell peppers - "Crispy Hybrid", "Great Stuff Hybrid".
Since your garden is new you will want to take plenty of time preparing the soil. Be sure to work in lots of organic material (compost, mushroom compost, composted cow manure, etc.). You will also want to make sure the soil is loose and workable when you are ready to plant. This can be accomplished by tilling or double digging. Consider having a soil test done to check out nutrients and pH; contact your county Extension agent (ph# 816-792-7787) for soil test kits.
