The Q&A Archives: unknown plant

Question: i bought a flower at the local nursery they didnt know the name of it since it was not marked when it arrived the plant has a flower almost looks like a fish the colors are red and yellow small about the size of a nickel. the leaves are a dark green the stem is thick and very moist i would send a picture but dont think i can on this page the flower also has a little hole in the bottom but is still attached to the main flower, I know this will not help but i am thinking that it is called a fish plant or something if you can get anything out of this please let me know thank you bev

Answer: Maybe it is a goldfish plant, meaning a Columnea of some kind. These are fun plants but can be a challenge to grow at home. These plants like high humidity, bright but indirect light, evenly damp yet well drained soil (meaning not saturated or sopping wet soil) spring through fall, and a bit drier in winter. Enjoy your new plant!
