My hopseed shrub which is now about 12 feet tall and beautifull has some dead areas.
I noticed while trimming little black dots or bugs up and down the trunk. What is this and is is killing my shrubs. How can I remedy this?

Your hop bush (Dodonaea) is not particularly prone to any diseases so I wonder if what you're seeing on the trunk are insects? Try collecting a few samples and taking them into your local Cooperative Extension office or Master Gardener Plant Clinic for identification. Once they have been identified, helpful folks there will give you some control options. Best wishes with your garden!
