It's a good idea to start with a plan. First, you need to make a site assessment so that you choose appropriate plants for your sun exposure. I recommend you take a look at a book called "Earth-Friendly Desert Gardening" ISBN 0-9651987-4-X, by Arizona Master Gardener Press. It contains a chapter on site assessment and determining how you (and family) will use the space and the best way to to achieve that so you don't end up with space that is unusable. For installing grass, I recommend "Desert Landscaping for Beginners" ," 0-9651987-3-1, also by Arizona Master Gardener Press. It contains an excellent chapter on lawn installation and maintenance. Both of these books are written by local experts so they are specific to our conditions. Good luck!
