I had great difficulty starting any tomato seeds last year. My only guaranteed warm place in the house is on top of the fridge, but it is dim. Is light absolutely required for germination? Can I move them to a window after they have sprouted?

Your tomato seeds should germinate without artificial light, but as soon as the first seed-leaves appear, they need light to manufacture the energy to grow. Once they sprout you need to move them to a bright window, or provide artificial light. You can help the soil retain moisture by covering the trays with plastic wrap until the seeds germinate.
