How can I find out what type of soil is in my yard?

You can have your soil tested, either at a private lab or through the university. Contact your Extension office and request a soil test kit. You'll submit a small bag of soil for testing and the results will identify the type of soil you have (clay, sandy, loamy, etc.) and what nutrient levels it has. The test results will include recommendations for improving the soil.
