Pygmy Date Palm (Phoenix roebelenii) will tolerate a light, brief frost. It's a small to medium sized palm, growing 7'-10' tall. Provide afternoon shade for best appearance. Phoenix roebelenii are hardy to around 24?F (-5?C) for a short time, and will suffer some damage to the fronds if cold weather is for an extended period of time. If you can plant it in a protected area, or can cover it if snow is predicted, you can grow one in your Central California garden.
