Answer: The wooden stake is used to help support the main stem or "trunk" of the topiary while it is being trained to grow in that form. If it seems strong enough to be self supporting you can remove it. If not, keep the stake in place. YOu might also want to leave the stake if it is in a windy spot. But be sure to loosen the ties so they do not bind into the bark.
