The Q&A Archives: SUNRISE VARIEGATED ABELIA stem color?

Question: I am trying to identify a plant I saw in Oakland CA. It looks like the SUNRISE VARIEGATED ABELIA in your picture. However the plant I saw had black stems, contrasting nicely with the variegated leaves.

Are the stems of the SUNRISE VARIEGATED ABELIA dark? If not, what other plant might I have seen?

Answer: Sunrise variegated Abelia has dark reddish stems which may look black in the right light. I think it's the same plant. I know of no other abelia with black stems.
