| I want to plant 15 pink-a-boo weigela's (zone 6-9) as a privacy screen. I am in zone 5 but a local nursery is selling them here with a 1 year guarantee. We had several days last winter with temperatures in the -20's. They would be semi-protected from wind. Would they be likely to survive in our area? Also what would be the recommended spacing? It is not mentioned on the tag. |
| Your zip code places you in zone 5A or the coldest part of zone 5. In a windy, exposed or rural location it could actually be as cold as zone 4 depending on your microclimate. So for a hedge planting I would suggest you be conservative and use something rated winter hardy well into zone 4. This particular weigela is unusual in that it is a cultivar of Weigela coraeensis (W. coraeensis`Moncor`) and it is listed as winter hardy only into zone 6. So it is less winter hardy than the usual weigelas -- most are Weigela florida cultivars -- predominantly rated to zone 4 (along with a few to zone 3 and some to zone 5). So in all honesty I would not recommend planting this particular weigela in your area. I would suggest you take a look at the weigelas listed in the online catalog and see if any of the hardier ones appeal to you. If you type weigela into the search box, it will list them along with their hardiness zones, and you can click through to descriptions from there. I'm sorry I can't be more encouraging. |
