| i planted about 30 shrubs in a new bed last spring. i haven't had a chance to feed them yet (or add more mulch)- i'm in media, pa -zone 6 - it's now june 15th and it has been pretty hot (90 degree temps) but it's going to cool down a little this coming weekend. is it too late to fertilize? the bed is in a full sun location, fairly wet area (shrubs are: inkberry hollies, clethra, winterberry hollies, redtwig dogwoods, itea) and in the not so wet area: photinia, weigela, daylilies. as always, thank you so much for all your help - i love your website - it is SO helpful, (i'm a little obsessed with plants and landscaping!!!) |
| You could certainly apply a top dressing of good quality compost and possibly also some general purpose granular or slow release fertilizer with an analysis of 10-10-10 or similar proportions, read and follow the label instructions. Refreshing the mulch is also important because it helps feed the soil on an ongoing basis as it breaks down slowly over time. You should try to keep a two to three inch layer in place.
