Hydrangeas do best in a soil that is organic and humusy, so an annual top dressing of a good quality compost is a good idea, as is using a year round layer of organic mulch that can break down slowly and feed the soil on a continuing basis. It is best to fertilize on the basis of soil test results, however you can also use an all purpose granular or slow release fertilizer in spring. Look for a complete formula such as 10-10-10 or similar proportions. Read and follow the label instructions. Enjoy your hydrangeas!
