The Q&A Archives: Sweet potato season

Question: Is the Boston area too far north to sucessfully grow sweet potatoes? If it is feasable to grow them, which variety do you recommend?

Answer: There are several varieties of quick-maturing sweet potato that will thrive in your area. Burpee offers the tried and true 'Georgia Jet' which takes just 90 days to mature (most sweet potatoes need 90-120 warm days to mature). They are tender plants, so be prepared to cover them if an unusual cold snap is predicted. Revisit the Burpee website to scan the on-line catalog, and to order a "real" one.
