The Q&A Archives: evening blooming shrub

Question: My neighbor had a shrub that bloomed in the evening. The blooms opened quickly, we could watch them opening. I believe the plant had yellow flowers and trapped insects for pollination. Have you heard of this shrub/plant?

Answer: This might have been an evening primrose (Oenothera) of some kind. This is the only plant I can think of that opens in the evening or at dusk with yellow flowers. Oenothera biennis is one that is fairly large and could seem like a bush. Here are links to some photos. You may need to cut and paste the complete url into your browser to make it work correctly. I hope this is it!
