What is the root tendancy of this tree? Does it have pretty fall color? Also, which nurseries near Roseville Ca or Sacramento might have it? I like the blue robe locust. Would it be okay to plant near a driveway in a flower bed that is not near lawn? thanks!

The Allee elm has an extensive root system and rather large mature size (40') so if you have plenty of space, this is a nice landscape tree. The roots typically extend out about one and one-half times the diameter of the canopy and remain in the top 18-24" of soil. It will grow well in your central California garden and will produce lovely fall color. It likes moisture but will be drought tolerant once the roots are established. I think it may be too large for the site you describe.

Blue Robe Locust is a fast growing tree with an open growth habit. The bark is deeply furrowed and brown in color. In late spring for approximately a 10 day period it blooms fragrant four to eight inch long dense clusters of bright purplish-pink showy flowers (similar to sweet-peas). It grows about 30' tall and 20' wide.
