Ornamental grasses are difficult to transplant or divide because they have very deep and very strong and tough root systems. The best time to try it is in early spring. Be prepared for a serious digging job (you may need an axe or saw to cut the roots if it is an established clump), replant immediately and keep the soil evenly moist as you would for a new plant while it re-establishes. Often a large plant will be dying out in the center to form a sort of donut shape, if so, replant portions of the vigorous outer edge.
