There are many plants that will do well in shade besides hostas. You can look at ferns, Tiarella, Tricyrtis, Viola, Liriope, Solomon's Seal (Polygonatum), Helleborus, Dicentra, Epimedium, Actaea (sometimes called by its old name of Cimicifuga, Bugbane), Asarum, Convalleria, along with Astilbe, Polemonium (Jacob's Ladder), Phlox divaricata, Alchemilla mollis, Mertenisia virginica (Virginia bluebells) and Lamium. I hope this gives you some ideas. These are all hardy into zone 5 so should be very reliable for you. Your local professional nursery staff may have additional or different suggestions based on a more detailed understanding of your planting area.
