But if you look on a plant zone-map, you will see that where I live in Chester, WV, which is the northern most part of West Virginia, at the top of the panhandle, it is very close to Zone 5. I love Crepe Myrtles. Realistically, can I successfully grow a Crepe Myrtle on my property? I live on a hill where there are no other buildings and very few other trees. | Unfortunately it does not sound like you have a favorable location -- ina windy exposed location your actual zone is probably the equivalent of zone 5 -- but sometimes plants surprise us. Pecos or one of the other National Arboretum introductions with improved hardiness would be a better choice if you want to experiment and see. Make sure to plant it in a well drained location with full sun. You could also mulch heavily in late fall and provide a wind break such as fencing each winter. You might find that the plant winterkills back to the ground every year, but since it grows quickly and blooms on new wood it will still bloom each summer. |
