Viburnums can grow quickly and sometimes unevenly so to keep your shrubs looking neat and attractive, you can shear them back each year. It isn't necessary, but it won't hurt your plant. I like my shrubs to have a natural look, but sometimes I also want to control their size. To maintain a neat and natural look I selectively shorten some of the branches and leave the others alone. If you want a more formal, uniform look, you can use hedge trimmers and shear off a few inches of growth all the way around your shrub. Hope this clarifies things for you!
