| When is the best time to plant a Red Maple Tree? I would like to plant one in our back yard. It gets the afternoon sun but is shadier in the morning hours. What care would it need? And...do the leaves stay red all summer long? Thank you for your help. Shirley |
| Red maple or Acer rubrum is known for its red coloring in the fall. The rest of the year the leaves are green. You can plant these trees most easily in spring or fall although container grown trees can also be planted in the summer. July and August are the most stressful times to plant so if you are able to wait until fall, that is a better time to purchase and plant your tree. You will need to keep it watered so that the soil stays evenly moist while it is becoming established. It should grow fine in afternoon sun if it is all afternoon; this tree likes a full sun location. Keep in mind also that this is a large tree when it matures so make sure you have room for that in your yard. Enjoy your tree! |
