We live in a very rocky area of the Shenandoah Valley and would like
to plant one of your purple smoke trees. There as significant rock
formation approx 10-12

Cotinus Royal Purple grows only about 15' tall so the root system won't be very extensive. You can expect the roots to be concentrated in the top 10-12" of soil and extend out about one and one-half times the diameter of the canopy. I think the roots will have plenty of room to explore and will tend to grow out rather than down if they run into extremely rocky soil. Hope this information is helpful!
