The Q&A Archives: Ornamental Paver Grass

Question: I believe there is a low growing grass used for eco pavers that once stepped on smells like either lemon or mint-- it was mainly used in English gardens. I can not find the name of this plant and was hoping that you knew what I was referring to.

Answer: You may be thinking of a low growing thyme; there are many creeping thymes that could be used between pavers where foot traffic is fairly light. There are many different types of creeping or low growing thyme and they are all fragrant when stepped on, severa are lemon scented such as Thymus x citriodorus "Aureus" or Thymus serphyllum "Aurea." Most nurseries with a strong perennial department should offer a good selection of thymes.
