| We have a North facing terrace. It gets sun in the AM. Is there a type of Wisteria that might work for us. How big must the planters be to accommodate roots. We'd like something to survive NYC winters and also climb up on iron work around our door. I do love Wisteria and would love to find one that would thrive. (PS - we also get an enormous amount of wind sometimes) Thank you! |
| Unfortunately Wisteria is really a sun loving plant, it needs ample sun to grow and bloom well. So while it might survive in a shady northern exposure I would not expect it to bloom there. Wind can also be a limiting factor in that any vine acts like a sail in a heavy wind and can be blown down -- or can tear down its support. Wisteria is a huge and potentially very heavy vine requiring a sturdy support. Finally, growing any plant year round in a container is difficult because the roots are not as well insulated as they would be in the ground. This exposes them to extreme cold as well as to temperature fluctuations which are just as damaging. So all in all I do not really think this is feasible. I'm really sorry I can't be more encouraging. You might want to check with your local retailer and see if they have any other suggestions based on a more detailed understanding of the planting location and your design goals. |
